What Is My Purpose?
The Search for Purpose
One of the most common questions people ask in life is, “Why am I here? What is my purpose?” There is a deep longing in the human heart to know that our lives have meaning.
Many people spend their entire lives searching for purpose in the wrong places. They chase money, relationships, careers, or fame, believing that these things will bring them fulfillment. Yet, even those who seem to have it all—fame, fortune, and success—often express feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction.
Jim Carrey, a famous actor and comedian, once said, "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer."
We can see real-life examples of this struggle everywhere. Celebrities who seem to have everything still battle depression. Those who amass great wealth are still left searching for more. The truth is, nothing in this world can satisfy the longing in our hearts except God.
Augustine of Hippo once said, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
The good news is that the Bible gives us clear answers about our purpose. We do not have to wander aimlessly. God created us with a divine plan, and through His Word, we can discover why we are here.
²⁹ "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." (Romans 8:29 NKJV)
God’s plan for us is to be like Christ, bring Him glory, and fulfill the specific purpose He has given to each of us. Today, let’s explore what it means to live with purpose.
• I. Our Primary Purpose: To Know and Glorify God
A. We Were Created to Know God
Our ultimate purpose is not found in what we do, but in who we know.
³ "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." (John 17:3 NKJV)
Eternal life is not about achieving worldly success or living for temporary pleasures. It is about knowing God personally and walking in a relationship with Him.
Imagine a fish trying to live outside of water. It flops around, gasping for air, desperately trying to survive. No matter how hard it tries, it will never thrive outside of the water—because it was created for the ocean.
The same is true for us. We were created for God. When we are disconnected from Him, we feel lost and confused. But when we walk with Him, we find true life.
B. We Were Created to Glorify God
²⁷ "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (Genesis 1:27 NKJV)
Since we are made in God’s image, we are designed to reflect His glory. Our ultimate purpose is not to make a name for ourselves, but to make His name known.
¹⁰ "That in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him." (Ephesians 1:10 NKJV)
Have you ever looked at the moon shining brightly in the night sky? The moon doesn’t have light of its own—it simply reflects the light of the sun. In the same way, we do not shine on our own, but we reflect the light of God’s glory when we live for Him.
- Are you living to make God known, or are you living for yourself?
- Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal more of Himself to you.
• II. Our Unique Purpose: God Has a Specific Plan for Each of Us
A. Designed for a Divine Purpose
²⁰ "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV)
Each of us is carefully crafted by God for a specific mission. You are not an accident—you were made on purpose, for a purpose.
B. Biblical Examples of Purpose
1. Moses – Called to Deliver God’s People
- Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s house but was called to lead the Israelites out of slavery (Exodus 3:10).
- He doubted his ability, yet God equipped him for his mission.
2. Esther – Called for "Such a Time as This"
- Esther was positioned in the palace not by accident, but by divine purpose (Esther 4:14).
- She could have remained silent, but she chose to step into God’s plan.
3. Paul – Called to Spread the Gospel
- Paul was transformed from persecuting Christians to becoming a missionary.
- Key Verse:
• ¹⁶ "But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you." (Acts 26:16 NKJV)
- Like Moses, Esther, and Paul, God has a plan for your life.
- Sometimes, our calling is revealed as we walk in obedience.
• III. How to Discover Your Purpose
A. Seek God in Prayer
⁵ "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;
⁶ In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV)
• Ask God to show you His will.
- Be patient—God’s timing is perfect.
B. Use Your Gifts and Talents for God's Glory
¹⁰ "As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." (1 Peter 4:10 NKJV)
• What talents and abilities has God given you? Use them for His glory!
C. Walk in Obedience
⁹ "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." (Galatians 6:9 NKJV)
• Do what you already know is right—God will reveal more in time.
• IV. Living with Purpose Every Day
A. Serve Others
¹³ "For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." (Galatians 5:13 NKJV)
B. Stay Close to God
⁵ "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5 NKJV)
• Conclusion: Your Life Has Meaning
You were created by God, for God, and your purpose is found in Him. No matter what stage of life you are in, God has a calling for you.
Imagine standing before God one day and hearing Him say:
²¹ "Well done, good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21 NKJV)
That is true success—not money or fame, but fulfilling the divine purpose God has for you.
Prayer:
“Lord, thank You for creating me with purpose. Help me to walk in obedience to Your calling. Guide me to fulfill the plan You have for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
